Peter V Hall is Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Academic, and Professor of Urban Studies at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. He is also an associate member of the Geography Department. His research examines the connections between port cities, seaports, and logistics, as well as community, local economic, and employment development. The Expert panel will benefit from his expertise in city and regional planning.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carola Hein is Professor and Head of the History of Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology. Her book publications include The Capital of Europe, Rebuilding Urban Japan after 1945, Port Cities: Dynamic Landscapes and Global Networks, and the Routledge Handbook of Planning History. Among other major grants, she received a Guggenheim Fellowship to pursue research on The Global Architecture of Oil and an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship to investigate large-scale urban transformation in Hamburg in international context. She currently works on the transmission of planning ideas among port cities and within landscapes of oil and teaches a studio on Architecture and Urbanism Beyond Oil. She has developed the portcityfutures.org initiative, investigating the evolving spatial use and design of port city regions over time,in particular addressing when port and city activities occur in the same places and sometimes conflict.
Carlos Correia is a Civil Engineering graduate specializing in Transportation and Territorial Planning from the Instituto Superior Técnico, with a 30-year career in the mobility and transport sector. His expertise includes strategic planning, economic and technical project analysis, and management of transport systems.
Since 1997, he has held key management roles in state-controlled companies, directing planning, studies, and system management efforts, and has been instrumental in providing technical consultancy for various strategic projects. His career also features significant public service, including technical advisory roles to government officials, management of state-supervised transport companies, and leadership positions such as the presidency of AMTL - Autoridade Metropolitana de Transportes de Lisboa, and IMTT, I.P. - Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes Terrestres.
He has contributed to regulatory oversight, strategic planning, and development efforts across several transport sectors, including serving as President of the AMTL Executive Committee and leading strategic initiatives for the National Railway Network (REFER, EPE) and IP - Infraestruturas de Portugal, Clients and Mobility Department. His work has not only influenced policy and infrastructure development but also earned him official recognition from government officials.
From 2015 to 2016, he was the Head of Office for the Assistant and Environment Secretary of State. Later, he served as an Executive Board Member for the Lisbon Port Authority (APL) and Setúbal and Sesimbra Port Authority (APSS), positions he held until October 2022, when he was appointed Chairman, a role he currently maintains.
Hilda Ghiara, is Aggregate Professor and Tenured Researcher in Applied Economics, DIEC (Department of Economics, - University of Genoa Italy and member of the scientific board of the Italian Centre of Excellence for Integrated Logistics (CIELI). Responsible of a full module (Department of Economics), University of Genoa (Maritime and Port Economics). Author, co-author or editor of several scientific international publications, she is regularly a speaker/session chairman at scientific and professional conferences. She is Project manager of international research programs financed by the European Union and other private and public institutions. Since 2009 she has been a main promoter and project manager of the project Genoa Port Center (Port of Genoa Exhibition & Education Center), an initiative aiming to advance port communication and port knowledge exchange. The project won in 2009 a Special mention for ESPO award and in 2012 the Port of Genoa who has been chosen to receive the ESPO Award for societal integration dedicated in 2012 to the theme of Youth.
A seasoned entrepreneur and manager, Mario Girard has been President and CEO of the Quebec Port Authority (QPA) since January 2011.
Mr Girard is renowned for his vision and his ability to successfully build and mobilise teams to carry out large-scale projects. A prolific and creative business developer, he has extensive experience in national and international business development.
He was also President and CEO of the Fondation de l'entrepreneurship from 2008 to 2011, where he helped mobilise the business and government communities to improve entrepreneurial performance in Quebec. From 1985 to 2007, he was the founder and CEO of two information technology companies: Nstein Technologies and Gespro Technologies.
Mario Girard is a member of the prestigious World Presidents Organization. A Certified Corporate Director (CCD), Mr Girard has served on the structured boards of several organizations for over 20 years. He is past Chairman of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities (ACPA), Vice-Chairman of the International Association of Cities and Ports ( AIVP) and of the Société de développement économique du Saint-Laurent (SODES), and a member of the boards of the Romeo Dallaire Foundation and the Conseil du patronat du Québec (CPQ).
Benno Bultink, innovation manager with expertise on transitions on infrastructure planning and integrated water management, is working for Rijkswaterstaat, the directorate general for Public Works and Water Management, part of the ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Netherlands. He is currently the project manager of Connected River, a leading, EU-funded transnational innovation project which aims to tackle challenges related to shared waterways and waterfronts. He deserves credit for his front-running work on user centric, agile innovation and collaboration across borders.
After 20 years with the Port of Rotterdam, Isabelle Vries now works for the municipality of Rotterdam, where she coordinates the development of the university campus. She also has her own design office. Her last position at the Port of Rotterdam was as development manager for the former Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) port area.
