Dredging is essential for navigability but must be managed sustainably. This lab will explore new methods, environmental safeguards, and innovative practices that minimize ecological impact, while also examining how dredged material can be reused in circular economy projects.

Mr. Angel Pulido has been the CEO of the Seville Port Authority since November 2014. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Civil Engineering in Madrid. He also holds an Executive MBA (2008-2010) from IESE Business School and a Master's degree in Port Engineering and Management (2000-2001) from the University of Civil Engineering in Catalonia. He was Director of Infrastructure at the Seville Port Authority from 2012 to 2014 and Director of Sustainable Development Planning from 2004 to 2012. He worked for SPIM as an engineering consultant from 2003 to 2004. He also worked for PROINTEC in the Ports and Coasts Department from 2002 to 2003.

Calum SMITH

Communications and Public Affairs Manager
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DREDGING COMPANIES

Calum Smith is the Communications and Public Affairs Manager at the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC). Based at IADC headquarters in the Netherlands, Calum works with members of the global dredging industry to facilitate knowledge sharing and best practice, and to promote the value of the industry and its shared sustainability action.

Calum began his career as a political advisor in the Scottish Parliament before progressing to a communications role at the Air Transport Action Group, a Geneva-based aviation association. He then took up the position of Communications Specialist at Dutch energy company, SBM Offshore, before joining IADC.

Calum holds an undergraduate degree in History and an MSc in International Relations, both from the University of Aberdeen.

Joshua NELSON

Principal Project Director - Transportation

Joshua Nelson is the USA Regional Director, Ports & Terminals for Hatch where he is responsible for the firm’s planning and engineering work in the container, breakbulk, dry/liquid bulk, RoRo, and cruise space.  With over 20 years of experience in transportation infrastructure, Joshua is leading several key projects for Hatch including the Manhattan Cruise Terminal Master Plan here in New York City (which has just been released by the New York City Economic Development Corporation), detailed design work for the new 168-acre Sparrows Point Container Terminal in Baltimore, and an inland port feasibility study for McKinley County, New Mexico. 

Joshua combines a technical understanding of transportation systems and operations with a strong background in strategic planning, policymaking and public outreach.  He is experienced in designing, implementing and managing complex multi-million-dollar transportation operations, capital projects and triple bottom line asset management strategies, negotiating public-private and interagency agreements and interacting with the press, elected officials and the public. 

Joshua holds bachelor’s degrees from the University of Utah in organizational communication and Spanish.  He also holds a Master of Science in Transportation and a Master in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
